Environmental Justice Movement Website

Last Updated:

Target Audience:

This website contains a number of resources that could be used effectively at the intermediate through advanced levels.

Context for Application:

This website would be an excellent component of a unit on the environment and/or climate change. It would be suitable as a resource for an individual written or oral assignment, or for initiating discussion in small groups.

Value:

Because it covers so many themes (e.g. climate, toxins, fossil fuels, drinking water) through the lens of poverty, and racial discrimination, it is an excellent resource for introducing intersectionality in global issues.

Description:

This American website highlights the work of the Natural Resources Defense Council - an environmental advocacy group.   It's home page describes how the most vulnerable members of a society (low-income communities of colour) are the most impacted by polluting facilities like landfills, waste transfer stations, incinerators, garbage dumps, diesel bus and truck garages, and radioactive waste storage areas.  It provides media, reports and issue briefs on a variety of topics such as deforestation, drinking water contamination and the climate crisis.   Its 'take action' section provides tool kits for becoming a better informed consumer, and public health advocate.
