This mixed-methods study examines the impact of the Wordtune AI writing tool on Saudi EFL students’ writing skills over a 24-week period. Using pre-tests, post-tests, and qualitative analysis of writing samples, the study compares students who used Wordtune with those who received traditional instruction. Results show that students using Wordtune significantly outperformed the control group. Qualitative analysis reveals improvements in lexical choice (more precise nouns, verbs, and adjectives) and syntactic complexity (greater use of compound and complex sentences). Importantly, the study finds that Wordtune benefits both male and female learners equally and is most effective when used as part of guided writing practice rather than as an editing shortcut.
