Let’s Get Writing (Open Educational Resource: book)

Last Updated:

Target Audience:

This OER downloadable book is targeted at students pursuing undergraduate studies who need guidance with the writing process at the post-secondary level. The authors address the student in presenting the content, making the book suitable for independent use, although classroom use with the guidance of the EAP teacher would be even more effective.

Context for Application:

The book covers a variety of post-secondary study skills such as critical reading and note-taking in addition to its primary focus which is to develop solid writing skills, specifically skills in research writing. The authors argue that everything worth writing and reading begins with a specific question, and thus developing an argument is a central theme in this book.

Value:

The authors are clear that improving skills takes practice, feedback, and revising. Their ten chapters include: "What Makes a Good Sentence?", "Which Word is Right?", "Finding and Using Outside Sources" and "How and When to Cite". Reading from the screen is very reader-friendly with an intuitive navigation that makes on-screening readable easier than reading from a digital pdf.
